Constructing Tape Loops For Analog Tape Delays                                                                                                     




Making tape loops for your own analog tape delays is not very difficult, you just need to understand the procedure and be gentle as tape loops are very fragile.

The tools

For start making your own loops you will some basic tools, there are:

  •  A tape splicer*
  • A cutter
  • A splicing tape or just simple tape
  • Some tape (probably a tape reel)
  • A scissor
  • A pair of surgery gloves


* A tape splicer is a special surface that helps you cut and process a magnetic tape easily. You can do the whole procedure without having a tape splicer but the procedure is too difficult, time consuming and I wouldn't recommended us the results are not very good either. Additional information

Please remember to use gloves as if you work without the touch of your hands will affect the quality of the tape loop. Using gloves helps keeping the magnetic surface of the tape clean.

Is also very important to do the whole procedure of construction the tapes on a clear surface with minimum dust as it affects the quality of the products too.



Step 1

On a clean working surface (probably a table) mark the length of the tape you want to construct, like for example 50 cm. In this way you can cut multiple tapes of the same length easily, avoiding mistakes.


Step 2

Tape your tape reel and drag as many tape is needed to cover the distance you previously marked on the table. After reaching this point use the scissor to  cut the tape from the reel. You can do this procedure as many times as the number of the tapes you want to construct.

Step 3

Take a piece of tape that you previously cut and put one of its sides in the tape splicer. When adjusting it try to exceed a little bit (3 - 4 cm) the middle of the splicer. Remember that the part exceeding the middle will be cut off so we don't want too much tape to get over this point. If you don't take care off this your tape will be too short in the end. So after adjusting the tape correctly, cut it using the inclined cut path. Some splicer tape machines a vertical cutting path, is important not to use this one.

Step 4 

Readjust the other side of the tape in the splicing machine and cut by using the same cutting path. Remember to keep the other side of the tape in the tape splicer too.

Step 5

Know is time to connect the two cut parts. For the task you will need some splicing tape ( or some normal tape will do). Cut a small piece of tape like in the picture and press it carefully between the cut parts of the tape like in the photo illustrated below. In this step is very important not to move the cut parts when placing the tape on them. If you do it wrongly the loop will be connected awry, so be careful.

Step 6

Cut the remaining connecting tape in the sides of the magnetic tape by using the special cutting paths of the splicer. Be careful not to damage the tape. Push with your fingers gently the connection tape vertically to make it sit better on the loop.

Step 7

De-attach the tape loop from the splicing machine and your know tape loop is ready. Remember to store it somewhere safely in a dry environment without dust.
